A mother today told how her baby 'bounced' to safety after plunging 20ft from a window.
Dawn Longhurst, 22, feared the worst when 20-month-old Callum fell from their second floor home - but landed unscathed on a patch of grass in Brighton, East Sussex.
The baby boy was rushed to hospital and kept in overnight for CT scans and X rays, but doctors at the Royal Sussex County Hospital could find nothing wrong with him.
Experts said Callum dodged injury because his supple bones effectively bounced on impact.
Dawn said Callum had been playing with his toys in their lounge when he fell out of the window while she was fetching her mobile from the kitchen on Thursday afternoon last week.
She said: 'We were in the sitting room and Callum was playing on the floor with his toys.
'I went into the kitchen to get my phone and when I came back in he was gone.
'I was only out of the room for a couple of seconds but that was enough time for him to disappear.
'He often hides from me so I checked behind the sofa but then my instincts told me to look out of the window.'
In the seconds that she was out of the room, Callum had climbed onto a coffee table and then onto a sofa before falling from the open window.
Dawn said today: 'I could see him outside. My heart was in my mouth.
'I rushed down to him and picked him up and brought him back upstairs.
'He was crying and screaming but the doctors later told me this was a good sign.
'I tried to comfort him but he was so upset and was holding his arm and his leg.
'The doctors were great. They told me the reason he wasn't injured was because he is so young and has supple bones so he effectively bounced.

Bangalore: Can you imagine that a fever and runny nose as well as the common seasonal infections can make you poorer by several thousand rupees?

The parents of Anusha, a nine-year-old, have spent nearly Rs. 70,000 in the last one month on getting her treated for fever and vomiting. Anusha’s problems began with high fever and nausea. A nursing home in Basaveshwarnagar here pronounced that she had viral gastritis. When her condition did not improve, her parents took her to a corporate hospital, where the initial diagnosis was Hepatitis ‘A’, which then became “throat and urinary tract infection” and finally dengue. “Apart from the fact that we had to spend nearly Rs. 70,000, we also had a harrowing experience because of the tension. My wife gets worried even if my daughter sneezes now,” Anusha’s father A.B. Satish said.

Similarly, Nazarulla, a resident of Sultanpalya, had to spend Rs. 6,000 to get treated for fever and related infections at a small nursing home in his area, something he could barely afford. His friend told this correspondent that the nursing home charged him Rs. 1,500 as “professional tax”. The same corporate hospital told another patient that he was suffering from a urinary infection and billed him Rs. 27,000 for a series of tests. The poor man did not get better and eventually went to his native place, Kerala. His doctor there told him it was only a case of simple food poisoning.

These are just a few examples of people paying through their nose to have common ailments treated. With the present weather in Tech City being conducive for viruses and allergens to thrive, hundreds of people are reporting fever, cold and upper respiratory tract infections. Most of them are being diagnosed by hospitals with chikungunya and dengue.

With the virus culture and serological tests being too time-consuming (culture takes a month and serological tests take nearly three weeks), doctors are diagnosing patients clinically and treating them symptomatically. “Probably that is why the treatment gets prolonged and the result is exorbitant costs,” said a disgusted Mr. Satish.

Doctors, on their part, justify treatment based on clinical judgment. “We start symptomatic treatment immediately because the results usually arrive only after the symptoms subside. We have been seeing at least 50 to 60 cases a day with complaints of high fever, sore throat, body ache and vomiting,” H. Paramesh, paediatric pulmonologist at Lakeside Medical Centre and Hospital told The Hindu on Saturday.

Head of Neonatology in Manipal Hospital N. Karthik Nagesh, who has seen at least 12 confirmed dengue cases in the last one month, said: “Though most of the cases show symptoms of dengue and chikungunya, there are some strains of virus that we have not been able to identify. We get the culture and serology tests done only if it is inevitable. But we have no fatalities so far,” Dr. Nagesh said.

A £50,000 Thunderbirds-style pop-up garage has become the latest home-improvement craze.

The garage uses a hydraulic platform which can be hidden under a water feature, flowerbed or patch of gravel – or even a second car.

The futuristic parking option has drawn comparisons to the Thunderbirds aircraft hangar deep beneath Tracy Island.

The waiting list is already four months long and experts predict demand will continue to grow as families choose to improve their home rather than try to sell in a weak property market.

Cardok managing director Alastair Soper said: ‘It's 100 per cent secure, far more so than a garage or driveway, and the vehicle's completely protected from the elements.

‘It goes down well with insurance companies. One man with a Bentley had been charged an annual premium of more than £5,000 when he parked his car in a well to-do street but that fell to £1,500 when he installed the Cardok.

‘In London a lot of people who have garages want to use them as extra rooms because of the value that adds to the house. Installing a Cardok allows them to use their space most efficiently.’

Local councils are waving through planning applications because the Cardok construction allows far more rainwater to drain away into the soil than traditional paved drives.

Experts have said that the floods which brought areas of London to a standstill in the summer of 2007 were partly caused by a lack of soil to absorb the rain.
Nearly two-thirds of the capital's gardens are already at least partly paved over, amounting to an area equal in size to 22 Hyde Parks and this hugely increases the load on London's creaky drainage infrastructure.

Mr Soper said: ‘We install a gutter around the perimeter of the hidden platform and container at the bottom of the Cardok to collect rainwater running off a wet car when it's parked.

‘That can be directed to water the garden and filter through the soil, rather than running off onto the pavement and putting pressure on council drains. Planning officers are very keen on that.’

The lift, which takes 10 weeks to construct and about three days to install, operates silently.

Councils have given permission for them to be built in conservation areas, including the one around Ealing cricket ground, and the grounds of Grade II listed buildings.

A Cardok ‘mono’ lift with a flowerbed or water feature on top costs £42,000 plus VAT - plus the installation charge which varies according to ground conditions.

A lift robust enough for another car to be parked on top and lifted up costs £48,000 plus VAT and installation.

Taken on a mobile phone early one morning it captures the London landscape as well as four curious lights hovering over the Houses of Parliament. Could they be UFOs?

Derek Burden was working on the 16th floor of a building in Covent Garden in the capital's West End when he took the picture at 8.30am.

It was only when he looked at the image later with his girlfriend that he noticed the eerie shapes in the cloudy sky.

A thief used Google Earth to zoom in on historic buildings before stripping £100,000 of valuable lead from their roofs.

Tom Berge utilised the popular internet tool, which shows aerial photographs of towns across the world, to pinpoint museums, churches and schools across south London with lead roof tiles by their darker colour.

The 27-year-old, from Sutton, south London, escaped jail despite admitting using his computer to carry out more than 30 separate offences.

After identifying a potential target the builder would scale its roof, take the valuable roof materials and abseil down the side of the building, before selling the lead to scrap metal dealers

Among the buildings he stole from in a six-month spree were Honeywood Museum in Carshalton, Sutton High School for Girls and Croydon Parish Church.

Detective Sergeant Chris Grant, who led the investigation, said 'He was a prolific offender up until the time he was arrested.

'Since then our crime figures for theft of lead have reduced significantly.'

A friend of Berge, who did not wish to be named, said yesterday: 'He sat at home at scoured south London for targets with just a few clicks of the mouse.'

Minister beaten after clashing with Muslims on his TV show

A Christian minister who has had heated arguments with Muslims on his TV Gospel show has been brutally attacked by three men who ripped off his cross and warned: ‘If you go back to the studio, we’ll break your legs.’

The Reverend Noble Samuel was driving to the studio when a car pulled over in front of him. A man got out and came over to ask him directions in Urdu.

Mr Samuel, based at Heston United Reformed Church, West London, said: ‘He put his hand into my window, which was half open, and grabbed my hair and opened the door.

He started slapping my face and punching my neck. He was trying to smash my head on the steering wheel.

Then he grabbed my cross and pulled it off and it fell on the floor. He was swearing. The other two men came from the car and took my laptop and Bible.’

The Metropolitan Police are treating it as a ‘faith hate’ assault and are hunting three Asian men.

In spite of the attack, Mr Samuel went ahead with his hour-long live Asian Gospel Show on the Venus satellite channel from studios in Wembley, North London. During the show the Muslim station owner Tahir Ali came on air to condemn the attack.

Pakistan-born Mr Samuel, 48, who was educated by Christian missionaries and moved to Britain 15 years ago, said that over the past few weeks he has received phone-in calls from people identifying themselves as Muslims who challenged his views.

‘They were having an argument with me,’ he said. ‘They were very aggressive in saying they did not agree with me. I said those are your views and these are my views.’

He said that he, his wife Louisa, 48, and his son Naveed, 19, now fear for their safety, and police have given them panic alarms. ‘I am frightened and depressed,’ he said. ‘My show is not confrontational.’

Called "Live from Mars," this section features imagery from NASA's THEMIS camera on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft, and the HiRISE Camera from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. You can become one of the very first people to lay eyes on images taken just days or even hours ago. You can also see live satellite orbital tracks, or check out where these cameras plan to image next. But wait! There's more! Google to Sell Ads Targeted to Web Users' Interest

You may want to give some thought to the web sites you visit as Google has a plan to sell ads that are targeted to web users' habits.

The ad-targeting scheme is controversial and some of Google's competitors are already offering it; however, has the company has decided to take the step.

In January, Google sites had just a 1.1% share of the U.S. display ad market in January.

Google is taking a different approach from the competition and will let users view and change what interest-based categories they are assigned to online.

Privacy advocates applauded this decision as they are concerned, companies targeting ads, collect too much data about users.

The new ad program is called "interest based" advertising and will start on a a test basis across Google's network of partner websites and on its video-sharing site YouTube

The program is based on data Google collects about what Web sites users visit; however, the data won't be drawn from users' search queries, but from files known as cookies that Google installs on the Web browsers of users who visit pages where it places ads.

This system is able to track users who visit hundreds of thousands of sites displaying Google advertising. , Google, by following users through these sites, is able to display advertising that is relevant to each individual user.

Google said in a statement: “If you love to travel and frequently visit travel-related websites, you’re more likely to see interest-based ads about vacations and travel deals as you surf the web.”

“If you visit a website that sells pet supplies, you might see an ad from that particular pet supply website the next time you browse other sites showing interest-based ads from Google.”

Teen driver law aims to cut risks, but distractions, speed still kill

It's been more than 10 years since the state adopted a graduated driver's license system that, in part, prohibits teens from jumping in the car together for six months after they're licensed.

The law has saved teens' lives by eliminating a big distraction for young drivers, experts say. And data showed a 36 percent drop in fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers in the first 5 1/2 years after the 1997 Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act.

Still, too many young people die on the state's roadways every year as the result of risky behavior, said Bob Dallas, director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

"The numbers throughout the state indicate we still have a lot to do," Dallas said.

A week ago, two 16-year-old Cedar Shoals High School students were killed and a 15-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a wreck on the Athens Perimeter. Speed was a factor in the crash, which also injured another driver, the state patrol said.

Also this week, a 16-year-old Dawson County High School student was killed in a single vehicle wreck on Georgia Highway 136. He was the second Dawsonville teen killed in a car crash in three weeks.

On Feb. 28, a 16-year-old North Carolina high school student, his 20-year-old sister and 22-year-old brother were killed in a wreck on Interstate 20 near Madison, according to reports.

And four days earlier, a 17-year-old East Jackson Comprehensive High School student was killed and a fellow student seriously injured when he pulled out in front of a tractor trailer on Georgia Highway 129. The tractor trailer driver also was sent to the hospital.

In all last year, 18 16-year-olds were killed in car crashes, according to preliminary data from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Twelve of the crashes happened because the driver lost control, which indicates they were speeding.

Cedar Shoals High School Principal Ingrid Gilbert knew the two victims of last Saturday's crash very well. She called Robert Burgdoff and Kenneth Davis "wonderful kids."

"Being a parent of two Clarke County graduates, it's the worst news you can imagine," Gilbert said. "There really is nothing you can say. You pray constantly that your kids will make the right decision and do the right thing."

Burgdoff and Davis were on their way home from a round of mini-golf at Georgia Square Mall when Burgdoff lost control of his car, crossed the median and hit another car head-on.

Both teens had obtained their driver's licenses only recently, friends said. Davis could have gotten his license in November, but he waited an extra two months for Burgdoff to turn 16, friends said, noting how close the two were.

"All we can do is continue to talk to students about doing the right thing and making wise decisions," Gilbert said. "Maybe other kids will learn what tragedy can happen."

Teens tend to get distracted or show off when other teens are in the car with them, Dallas said.

That makes them more likely to speed, the most common cause of fatal crashes involving young drivers, according to a 2005 study by Emory University that analyzed the state's 1997 graduated license law.

And that's why the law requires 16-year-olds with an intermediate "Class D" license to only drive with members of their immediate family for the first six months, Dallas said.

For the next six months, a Class D driver only can have one passenger under 21 who's not an immediate family member. After that the driver only can have three passengers under 21.

"By saying how many teen passengers you can have, it eliminates the biggest source of distraction for a teen driver," Dallas said.

State lawmakers continue to work on rules for teen drivers.

The 2007 law known as Joshua's Law requires 16-year-olds to complete a driver's education course and log 46 hours of supervised driving before getting a Class D license.

While officials know that enrollment in driver's education classes has increased since Joshua's Law started Jan. 1, 2007, it's too soon to tell whether it's reduced fatalities or crashes, he said.

Dallas also touted a measure passed Thursday by the state House of Representatives that would ban teens from using cell phones while driving.

The plaster that warns you about staying too long in the sun ... by going red before you do

Could a simple plaster could spell the end of sunburn?

A plaster that warns sunbathers when they are likely to burn has been created by scientists in Scotland.

The dosimeter, which is sensitive to ultraviolet light, changes colour when the wearer is at risk.

The low-cost device, which is expected to cost around 10p, will take the form of either a wristband or a sticky plaster the size of a 2p coin. The product will even detect ultraviolet rays when worn under a swimsuit.

Scientists at The University of Strathclyde in Scotland announced their invention in the journal Chemical Communications.

Ultraviolet rays cause a chemical reaction in the plaster, releasing an acid into a dye, causing a change in colour. So when users stay in the sun too long, the dosimeter will turn from yellow to red, indicating that it is time to either cover up or go indoors.

Professor of chemistry, Andrew Mills described the acid-sensitive dye as 'intelligent ink'.

'People think of chemical reactions as happening in test tubes,' he said. 'But here you have a reaction in a very thin layer of ink film that produces a colour change.'

The device is expected to radically cut the chances of developing skin cancer, which can be a result of prolonged overexposure to the sun.

Experts say that it can take between four and eight hours for sunburn to show on the skin, by which point the damage has already been done.

The team are due to trial the dosimeter this summer, and hope it will be available for use from October this year.

The researchers say that they will be able to adapt the product to different skin types by adding an alkali to the dye, delaying the colour change.

'Our plan is to start a company that will make products out of this technology, such as wrist bands or clothing labels," said Professor of chemistry, Andrew Mills.

'We've already been approached by a number of skincare product manufacturers who are interested in the technology,' he added.

Skin cancer is the UK's most common cancer, killing over 2,300 each year. Jodie Moffat of Cancer Research UK believes that the product would be valuable in highlighting the damage that UV exposure can cause. She added that she could imagine 'this sort of device being used to encourage people to protect their skin

Fortune favours the brave: Student gambles it all and bags a cool £250,000 on Deal Or No Deal

It was the ultimate gamble. In one box was Deal or No Deal's £250,000 jackpot, and in the other was a solitary penny.

Alice Mundy, a 22-year-old trainee stuntwoman, had already accepted an offer of £17,500 from the mysterious 'banker' earlier in the Channel 4 teatime show.

But contestants are always allowed to gamble their winnings on the final two boxes. This is, however, the first time a player has risked it all when the only remaining prizes are so vastly different.

As the audience held their breath, Miss Mundy, from Monmouthshire in Wales,

clasped her hands together and weighed the options.

She had previously said that she would never gamble if it meant risking going home with just a penny.

Eventually, she chose box number 8 - and to her immense relief, it was opened to reveal the £250,000 prize.

Miss Mundy is only the second person to scoop Deal or No Deal's jackpot.

In a bizarre twist, the first winner was also a young woman from Monmouthshire.

Laura Pearce, however, had the marginally easier task of choosing between a box containing £3,000 and the winning one.

Just before opening the box, Edmonds said to Miss Mundy: 'On January 7, 2007 Laura from Monmouth won quarter of a million pounds.

'Now, Alice from Monmouth, are you just about to join her?'

Opening the box, he shouted 'Yes!' as confetti showered the Channel 4 studio.

The Great Pyramid is believed to have been built over a 20 year span. The pyramid is so huge and so perfect we wouldn't be able to construct something in this day and age that will compare. Each giant Stone ranges from 1 to 20 tons in weight, and the Great Pyramid consisted of well over 100,000 stones. But the Egyptians had no machinery, engines, or construction equipment. So the question still lurks, who built the great pyramids?

Theories suggest the Egyptians built these pyramids, but this asks us how Egyptians hauled 20 ton stones and placed them perfectly Hundreds Of Feet high (145.75 m, 481 ft high).. Some suggest they built a ramp with stones that went from the ground to the top.

The flaw in that theory is that It would take More Rocks to build the ramp than it would to build the Pyramid. When the Pyramid was done, where did these rocks go??? So that shoots down that theory...

Another question is How did they move these rocks.. Experts that insist Egyptians built the Pyramid suggest, Trees were cut down and smoothed off, and were used as giant rollers under these 20 ton rocks. If you would roll a 20 ton rock on 5 trees, The tree would be too worn down and awkward to haul another, so these logs would be replaced every Stone. Due to the fact there are over 100,000 stones that make up the pyramid, you would need an excess of a half million trees..

Problem with this theory is the lack of trees in that area. Egypt grows some Date Trees, that's about it. And they certainly wouldn't cut down all their date trees, for dates are one of the main foods in EGYPT!

Now the Great Pyramid was the biggest and tallest of all the Pyramids ever built. Since the Egyptians left us an entire detailed written summary of every event in Egypt imaginable, You would think the building of the greatest Pyramid would be discussed. But it Isn't. The Pyramid was referred to a few times in very early Hieroglyphics. Egyptian writing suggests the Great Pyramid Was Standing Before Egyptians Populated The Land. Ancient hieroglyphics have detailed writings of farming, giving birth, Pharaoh worship, Hunting, Building Structures, etc, BUT the Building Of The Great Pyramid Was Never Mentioned.

If it took 10,000 workers per month over a 20 year span to build the Pyramid like experts suggest, There wouldn't be enough people in a 500 mile radius to make this possible.

Actually ancient Egyptian writing often talk of beings from the sky, the sky opening and bright lights coming down to teach them technology and give them wisdom. Many pictures and symbols resemble ufo's and aliens. POSSIBLY aliens built the Great Pyramid. And these solid long lasting construction techniques were adopted by the Egyptians.

Pune to be India's first wireless city

MUMBAI: Taking a leap over Bangalore and Hyderabad, Pune will become the first Indian city to have a high-speed wireless Internet network even before the Centre's much-awaited spectrum policy is announced. The ambitious project, when complete, will enable people to access the Internet from anywhere in the city, without a cable, through their laptops or personal digital assistants (PDAs).
Christened "Unwiring Pune", the project was jointly announced by global chip-maker Intel Corporation and Pune Municipal Corporation in March 2006 and was kick-started on Monday.
Intel, along with Chennai-based Microsense, will establish infrastructure for a wireless communication network covering the entire 280 sq km of this cultural center of Maharashtra in a couple of years.
While Intel will provide design and planning support, Microsense will carry out network deployment. Microsense was involved in establishing a wireless Internet network at the airport here.
Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Intel Managing Director (South Asia) R Sivakumar, Pune Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale and others will flag off the project.
The technology used will be Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, commonly known as WiMAX, and wireless fidelity or wi-fi.
WiMAX is claimed to be the most cost-efficient way of building wireless data networks and a means to link people over large distances for "last mile" connectivity and bridging the digital divide.
However, deployment of WiMax faces delays as the Central government is yet to announce its spectrum policy, which will allot bandwidth for high-speed connectivity.
The Pune Municipal Corporation's step is aimed at providing ubiquitous connectivity to propel quicker adoption of e-governance and instant links to the world through the Internet.
With proposed backbone wireless communication network can be leveraged to meet the wireless networking needs of any citizen, university, or business with minimum additional investments, officials said.

Top secret stealth jet revealed

A formerly top secret, bat-winged stealth jet has taken the aviation world by surprise, after a low key unveiling in St Louis, Missouri.

It may look like it flew straight off the screen of a sci-fi movie, but the Bird of Prey is no flight of fancy - it could translate into serious business for its makers, aerospace giant Boeing.

"Here we have an example of a classic 'black' programme: an aircraft which has been built and flight tested for a number of years - and no one outside the programme knew about it," says Nick Cook, aerospace consultant to Janes Defence Weekly. Other highly classified aircraft that have ultimately been revealed included the U-2 and Blackbird spy planes and the B-2 stealth bomber.

The Bird of Prey cost $67 million and is the product of Boeing's advanced research and development division, the Phantom Works. It first flew in 1996 and is said to have demonstrated a range of stealth and production technologies.

Agile and stealthy

It is a single seat, single engine design and with a reported maximum altitude of 6100 metres (20,000 feet). Its top speed is a relatively sedate 480 km/h (300 mph).

The unconventional configuration of the Bird of Prey suggests it has been designed to be highly agile and stealthy. But even though the aircraft itself has been revealed to the public, the stealth systems designed to suppress acoustic, infra-red, radar and even visual signatures are likely to be as highly classified as ever.

Sources suggest they may include active camouflage systems to reduce visibility by using panels or coatings that change colour or luminosity. This could allow safe combat missions in daylight, rather than being restricted to night flying. "And that would represent a revolutionary milestone in aerial warfare," says Cook.

It is known that such technologies have been studied for several years, most probably at the remote test site in the Nevada desert near Groom Lake, better known as Area 51. This was also the probable location for the Bird of Prey's 38 test flights.

A key aspect of the project was that the aircraft would be inexpensive to build. Phantom Works engineers say they used disposable tooling and 3-D virtual reality for its design and assembly.

It has not been confirmed whether the Bird of Prey was ultimately intended to be manned or unmanned. But the aircraft has clearly had a major influence in the design of Boeing's unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) demonstrator, the X-45. Two of these pilotless combat planes are currently undergoing test flights.

Armed UCAVs are among the hottest projects in military aviation, having the obvious advantage of not risking life, as well as being cheaper than manned aircraft.

Cook is not surprised that the Bird of Prey was at least initially a manned aircraft, as this helps gather performance data. "You may be sure that lessons learned from this programme will find their way into both manned and unmanned aircraft, not simply in terms of flight characteristics, but crucially in the method of design and production," he says. And any company that steals a lead on its UCAV competitors stands to win very lucrative development and production contracts in the future.
